Sequential Figure & Ground
Project type
GDSN223
This project centered around the exploration of figure ground relationships through the lens of Gestalt theory. I focused on creating a layout that emphasized visual perception by experimenting with transitions and contrasts. My approach involved alternating dark and light boxes flowing along the contours of each letterform. While there was an initial pattern, I intentionally disrupted the rhythm by interesting breaks using irregular box placements to create visual intrigue. This helped challenge the viewer's perception and added to the overall composition. Sketching different Gestalt principles such as similarity, continuity, and closure allowed me to evaluate which concept translated best visually. From there, I chose a principle that struck a balance between aesthetic and structure. The final design invites the eye to engage down the paper.
